Although I’ve only had psoriasis for a couple of years now, I have tried a lot of things to help with my symptoms. Some of them were well-researched and evidence-based, while others were late-night panic purchases I made in a desperate itching frenzy. I will share what’s actually worked for me here.
Some of what I’ve tried, such as supplements, are intended to address the symptoms of psoriasis by strengthening the immune system, providing anti-inflammatory effects, developing immunity via supporting the gastrointestinal system, aiding detoxification, and addressing nutrient deficiencies. Others I view more as assisting once the psoriasis is already there and involve soothing the skin and limiting itchiness.
Through a lot of experimentation, I’ve found what works best for me right now.
After applying topical steroids, I slather myself in a thick layer of Aquaphor. Not only does it seal in the steroids so they can do their magic, but it also keeps my skin well-lubricated and softens scales. When my skin is hydrated, it is the least itchy.
TheraNeem Scalp Therap Shampoo and Conditioner alleviate scalp itchiness and dryness. Salicylic acid bodywash helps loosen scales and, in turn, decreases itchiness.
On really itchy nights, Benadryl is the only thing that allows me to get some rest. Doctors can also prescribe a stronger version, but this did the trick for me.
Regular therapy and acupuncture help with my stress; stress worsens psoriasis or at least your attitude toward it.
Prioritizing exercise and sleep is crucial for my well-being. Both are essential for immune health and functioning.
Below are some supplements that I currently use that might be helping but the jury is still out.

I am due for more blood work early this year, at which point I will see if any of my supplements are making a difference in my nutrient levels. However, I feel that I will never know the impact any of these remedies is having, given that my symptoms are now masked by my biologic. In the summer, I plan to taper off my biologic and will then be able to see what my psoriasis is doing now on its own, given these nonprescription remedies.
