How Do You Feel About Oral And Injectable Medications?

A MyPsoriasisTeam Member asked a question 💭

Do you use them? How did you reach thout decision?

Would you consider them if you were having a 3-year outbreak and topicals didn’t do anything but clear up symptoms for a few hours at best? If you started loosing your hair and felt the need to hide red skin, scabs and thinning hair or oily hair? That you itch all at day long and constantly fight the urge to scartch and pick?

I have battled psoriasis off and on for 35 years. It runs in my family. The areas affected started in my scalp, but also have affected my elbows, bottom of my feet and spots on my torso. I finally had to see another dermatologist when my scalp psoriasis got so bad that it felt like I had a helmet under my hair. The treatments started with UV, then otezla then humira with little or no effect. Then my doctor got me preauthorized for Taltz. The first treatment was 2 injections in the doctor's office. Then every 2 weeks at home, and finally every 4 weeks at home. Within 7 days after starting Taltz, my symptoms were 95% cleared up! Due to a change in my insurance, I recently had to go through the preauthorization again which delayed my refill by 2 weeks. I am now back on track and will use Taltz as long as it is available! Sometimes there is a little burning while giving the injection, but it is not severe, and I will endure it due the the effectiveness of the medication!

Scalp psoriasis plagued me for years & many topicals and shampoos later, I gave up. Only when i was diagnosed with PSA and given methotrexate tablets did my scalp miraculously clear.. . My scalp and the back of my neck used to become raw and bleed (at its worst) and flaked continuously (at its best). My hairdresser who walked the walk with me for the past 20 years cannot get over the dramatic change which happened about 3 years ago. I do use folic acid to counteract anaemia side effect. Test my blood quarterly for lowered cell count and Hb. Also for raised kidney and liver counts. So far so good. No problems with bone marrow or organs. It works for me and I have quality of life back. skin and PSA under control.

For me, my psoriasis is not interfering with my ability to function in my daily life, so the risk is not worth the reward. But for everyone else, if its worth it to you, God bless!

I've only gone into remission once in the 30+ years I've had psoriasis (pregnancy) and most topicals are just not effective at all, so I've just learned to live with it.

Humira has made a huge difference. And, this is a progressive disease if you also have joint involvement, so taking something is really necessary if you don't want to have permanent joint damage.

I finally went on Otezla for my psoriasis. It had gotten really bad. The Otezla definitely helps immensely. I had some side effects in the beginning but they have diminished with time.
