Corticosteroids
I take them in an ointment. What are the side effects , if any?
Thank you! I started my regiment last Wednesday and so far so good! My PCP instructed me to soak for 30 minutes in an oatmeal bath daily, such as Aveeno. Pat skin dry, and apply the corticosteroid ointment (Triamcinolone) ONLY to the affected areas. Finish treatment with Aquaphor applied to affected areas as well, or all over body, if desired. The Aquaphor, being an ointment, will hold in moisture and help the Triamcinolone stay put and work it's magic :) I had a terrible breakout all over my arms, my hands, bikini area(how embarrassing),legs and feet. I scratched CONSTANTLY! This stressed me out, and hence, it got worse due to the stress. Finally, my husband encouraged me to go to my provider to seek help. I was also prescribed an OTC 0.5% coal tar shampoo, such as Neutrogena T-GEL, or a generic of the same quality to be used twice a week. I FINALLY feel I am on the road to clear, healthy skin again. The red skin on my arm's has disappeared, and it's barely noticeably raised. I have red spots on my legs and feet still, but it is also healing well, and MUCH less itchy.
DON'T GIVE UP!
I just saw yesterday at CVS that Cera ve is making a cleanser and moisturizer for psoriasis. I'm not at that point to try right now. I'm in remission.
Some can thin the skin or cause atrophy (which can lead to stretch marks), or cause a loss of pigmentation. It depends on where you're applying it (bottom of feet and hands are less prone to these, the face is more prone). Some topicals (like Tacrolimus) aren't found to cause these side effects at all, and lower doses (like OTC hydrocortisone) are weak enough that the chances are very low. Your doctor may suggest reducing the use (often pulse therapy (1-3 times a week)) or switching to a weaker steroid after you get it under control to reduce these risks as well.
There is also a risk of exaserbating of a skin infection, which is why you should never apply it to a new rash unless you know it's psoriasis or dermatitis (it can also cause a false negative for fungal infections (like athlete's foot) if you apply it within a few days of getting tested for a fungal infection.
Then just the basics that anything you apply to the skin: irritation (if you have breaks in the skin they may burn like an SoB) or allergic reaction.
I need to check that out! Thank you for the info.
I am using Cera VE moisturizer it is working on my legs really well. Very expensive though. But worth it for me .
