Scalp Psoriasis And Haircuts

A MyPsoriasisTeam Member asked a question 💭

Anybody else have a hard time going to their hair dresser or barber out of anxiety about what they’ll think or see? Went 2 years without a haircut and cried the first time I had to tell them about my scalp.
If anyone has any tips on their approach to getting haircuts more frequently, I’d like to hear them!

Tried to get my hairdresser to shave my head once out of frustration. She was a good friend who looked me in the eyes and told me I had the ugliest scalp she'd ever seen and to keep my hair. Still laugh about that and I definitely thanked her and increased her tip that time! Laughing or crying remains a choice daily for us.

I just explain to the stylist that I have psoriasis. No my hair/scalp isn’t dirty. I also explain the issues with certain ingredients in the shampoo’s that irritates it if they are going to wash it. It’s embarrassing but I would much rather inform them before they say something and everyone else hears it. Best of luck

If you have scalp psoriasis, here are some tips for haircuts and hairstyling:

1. Brush Gently: Be as gentle as possible when combing or brushing your hair to avoid injuring the skin, which can cause psoriasis to flare.

2. Avoid Tight Hairstyles: Styles that pull tightly on the hair, such as tight buns, ponytails, and braids, can cause scalp irritation and potentially lead to a psoriasis flare-up.

3. Take Care With Heat Styling: Limit the use of high-heat styling tools like straightening irons and curling irons, as they can burn or irritate the scalp.

4. Limit Dye and Chemical Treatments: Coloring or relaxing your hair with chemical treatments can cause scalp irritation and psoriasis flares. Always perform a patch test before using new products.

5. Inform Your Hairstylist: Let your stylist know about your psoriasis so they can avoid harsh combing, brushing, or heat styling that could aggravate your condition.

6. Consider How Your Hairstyle Affects Your Treatment: Hair can complicate the application and penetration of topical treatments. Choose a hairstyle that makes it easier to stick to your treatment plan.

7. Creative Haircuts: Some people with scalp psoriasis opt for creative haircuts, like bangs, to help hide psoriasis lesions.

By following these tips, you can manage your scalp psoriasis more effectively while maintaining your desired hairstyle.
