Do You Take Prednisone For An Autoimmune Disease

A MyPsoriasisTeam Member asked a question 💭

As a psoriasis patient, have you ever been told NOT to take prednisone for other autoimmune diseases?

Have you ever been prescribed a short-term dosage of prednisone for an autoimmune disease in addition to your psoriasis?

No my doctor gave me pregnancy on for my flares and it's 10 mg and believe me I do not want to take it because prednisone. Induces diabetes and it put weight on you

Justin, My husband has psoriasis so I am on this site trying to support him. He was diagnosed with another autoimmune disease recently.

The derm phoned us earlier and said that my husband can start a lower dosage of prednisone next week if he still feels this new disease is unbearable. The derm told us to watch out for a rash from the prednisone. If that happens, he has to stop the prednisone.

No, I do not need prednisone for anything.

The tough thing to understand is that as medicine progresses, there are still doctors who don’t move with the times. Many doctors now know that giving Pso patients oral antibiotic prescriptions is a bad idea. The question is a good one.. how much of flares after strep are from the strep bug VS how many are from the antibiotics used to treat it?

Autoimmune conditions often involve digestive issues.. you know psoriatics have a harder time getting D from food and comorbidities include intestinal issues. Also consider that the forefront of the immune system is in the gut. It takes a long time for our bodies to collect the bacteria that our gut employs to digest food.. and the good bacteria that lines our gut. Sure people down tons of probiotics, but very few of those survive to live down there. The strains we have come more from what we eat. So wiping that out with antibiotics isn’t a very bright move and will also affect the immune system. Since psoriasis flares can follow dips in immunity, antibiotics are best saved for dire situations. Still, many doctors do insist on continuing to prescribe antibiotics for nearly everything. But, it doesn’t mean they’re good.

That’s about the same with prednisone. You can say your doctor will prescribe it, but you can also do some reading and won’t have to look very hard to corroborate the concerns against it, especially in autoimmune instances. Same goes for topical steroids… just not a good idea; not a sustainable treatment and they cause cumulative damage. In time, we’ll see more written about these things being bad for us. Until then, as always, we each have to be our own health advocates.
