Does Prednisone Prevent A Psoriasis From Developing?
Could Prednisone Stop a Ps. from Developing if it just started?
Inflammation is not good for the body. Your stress hormones rise with inflammation if can cause a multitude of diseases in the body.
Prednisone clears psoriasis. I have COPD with respiratory issues at times. My chest gets very tight and hard to breathe. My pulmonary dr puts me on prednisone to decrease the inflammation. The only thing is that when I am done with the prednisone I have a huge rebound effect with my psoriasis flares up. So I have asked for a very slow wean off of the prednisone. I also make sure that I do not skip my topical medication.
Hi @A MyPsoriasisTeam Member. Over 15 years ago, I definitely allowed myself to be talked into using prednisone to get me through the worst of my worst pso onset of guttate PsO. It worked too. Knowing now what dangers lurk behind it, I would push back on my then dermatologist.
Move forward 10 years, and my first ever debilitating PsA flare hits me so deeply, I'm completely immobilized with a shocking pain deep to my core. I was leaving for a cross-country VIP business trip, and my rheumatologist, although heavily warned me of the side effects, suggested I take it so I can get on with my business of the week. It eradicated the pain and I was able to move through with my business trip.
It really can be a miraculous drug -- it completely eliminated the pain and I was able to move through with my business trip! But even as @A MyPsoriasisTeam Member stated above, the long-term side effects are not worth it IMHO. In this day and age, we have other options.
When my daughter was a (tiny) 7-year-old and came down with a horrifying, rare blood disorder and no med or procedure helped her platelets from bottoming out-- her top-of-Country pediatric hematologist finally suggested very high-dosed Prednisone. The need was to halt her immune system from working. Long story short, the only med/treatment that saved her life, was a month’s course of heavy-duty prednisone. One month thereafter, my lil 7-year-old was back to normal, no need to have removed her spleen, and she was cured--for life.
Telling you all this because there is a definitive place for prednisone in our world with no doubt... But if you have other options-- I would go that route first. Same thing happened to me nine days ago. I was taken completely down with a miserable children’s virus that caused the worst-ever wheezing and shortness of breath. MD said five prednisone pills would fix me. So five days only -- and you know what--it knocked the crap right out of my lungs, and I was able to breathe normal again!
My love/hate relationship with prednisone continues. Hope that helped Art (and @A MyPsoriasisTeam Member). ♥️❤️♥️
I used many steroids beta methasone, dexamethasone and also prednisolone none of them are good for health as well as skin. They thin our skin. I also took only vegetarian for 2 years the result was very bad as my weight from 59kgs goes to 43kgs. My experience of about 39 years is a balanced diet with lots of protein and vitamin D. Thanks to all fellow members.
I put prednisone on my allergies list saying’I refuse to take it unless I’m dead or dying. I call it the miracle drug from hell.’
However, I did take the 5 or 6 dose pack when I first started cosentyx a month ago. My Mayo hand doctor prescribed it to maybe help me until the drug started working. That week, I have to admit that I felt pretty good.
However why I hate it is because in 2001, my Minneapolis rheum doc put me on what I thought was 1 mg prednisone saying take 1 for 2 days, then 2/day for 2 days then 3 the 5th day. I could almost jog up my stairs. Later I learned they were 5 mg tablets! So, yeah, 15 mg prednisone worked great! HOWEVER, 2 weeks later my left hip started hurting. Within 3 months, it was totally gone! And I mean necrotic‼️ 2 months later I had to have it replaced.
PLUS his “STUPID” nurse never ever told me not to stop it cold turkey and I’m so lucky I didn’t! It took me until May -like 4 months to wean myself off it! I had my hip done in July and they even had to give me some prednisone after or before surgery to make sure I didn’t croak and my body didn’t shut down.
That stuff is wicked for sure.
Now I’m going on 22 years with this hip and I’m kind of getting scared. My super fantastic doctor at Mayo has since retired and, although I know he has noted some other doctors on my chart, no one will ever replace him for sure!
So DO NOT TAKE PREDNISONE FOR ANY EXTENDED AMOUNT OF TIME! Plus if for some reason you do, talk to your doctor about weaning you off, ok?
