Otezla And Scalp Psoriasis

A MyPsoriasisTeam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone been prescribed Otezla for scalp psoriasis? I have scalp psoriasis (which I was blessed with 1 1/2 years ago at age 70) and have gotten no relief from prescription shampoo, prescription topical solution or foam. My derm has prescribed Otezla which I should receive next week. I’m a little nervous about taking something like this - the side effects sound a bit daunting but at 72 years old, I’ll try just about anything for some relief
It seems that scalp psoriasis is a whole different… read more

MigdaliaSanabria, thank you. I’ve been using Clobetasol Propionate topical for about a year and a half. Mostly I put it on at night (as in drench my scalp!) and it gives enough relief to the itch to fall asleep. Nothing has lessened the flares so I’m really counting on Otezla. Taking it for a year (as you did) would be so discouraging.

It worked amazingly for me for about 2.5 years. I only had a week or so of mild stomach issues and then they went away. I would totally do it. It was so nice to wear black again without looking like it has snowed on my shoulders!

I got over the side effects after a few weeks and got a partial clearing, but then I noticed new spots appearing every day. It went on for about a week before I stopped taking it, but it kept getting worse and I had a huge flair up. It took me 3 months to get back to where I was prior to taking it. I did that by taking suppliments. Some people have luck with it by my body hated it. It also made me more irritable. I used to tell my husband that he was on my last Otezla nerve. 😅 Good luck, I hope it works for you, just monitor your psoriasis carefully to see if it starts coming back.

- Mechanism: Otezla is a phosphodiesterase inhibitor that works by decreasing the amount of certain molecules that cause inflammation.
- Administration: It is taken orally as a tablet twice a day.
- Effectiveness: In clinical trials, people who took apremilast were five times more likely to have less severe disease after four months of therapy compared to those who took a placebo. It also showed improvements in symptoms like itching and reduced the affected scalp area.
- Side Effects: Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, upper respiratory tract infection, and headache. More serious side effects can include weight loss, nausea, vomiting, and depression.

Hi Deede,
I have severe psoriasis on my scalp. I was on Otezla for about a year. It did nothing for me. My dermatologist has prescribed clobetasol propionate topical solution, USP 0.05%. It works so well as long as you use it as prescribed.
