Can You Have Psoriatic Arthritis Without Ever Having Psoriasis?

Yes, you can have PsA without having psoriasis. I was diagnosed with PsA in 2023. I have never had any psoriasis rash or itching. My brother and I both have PsA. But he has both PsA and psoriasis. My mother has a very bad type of psoriasis but thankfully her psoriasis is in remission. PsA for me causes lots of stiffness throughout my body, swelling in most of my joints. Flare ups can get worse. I am currently on Enbrel injection. I have had a little improvement but doctor says it can take some time to know how well it's working. Since my brother was diagnosed before me, I pretty much knew my odds of having it was much higher. I wish you well.

I had a very small psoriasis rash near my elbow a few years ago, that is my only psoriasis experience. I used to get ‘random bouts of itching’ on my legs for no apparent reason. But haven’t had any since Talz kicked in for the psoriatic arthritis, so maybe itching was psoriasis related. I don't know.

Thank you for responding to my question. My scalp gets itchy too but no actual psoriasis. I was initially diagnosed with fibromyalgia years ago but have developed other symptoms that brought a diagnosis of PsA in Fall of 2023. I feel like a cripple my joints are so sore and stiff. My ankles and feet swell to the point my sneakers are tight. I just can’t believe PsA is my diagnosis. I’m in such disbelief.

I have been diagnosed with probable psoriatic arthritis as well as fibromyalgia, but don’t have psoriasis. My skin is super dry and itchy most of the time thiugj.

You can but I suspect you may discover what you thought was a rash or eczema was actually psoriasis. I thought I had some dry skin spots behind my ears and on my scalp. I went in for a regular skin cancer check and my Derm told me I had psoriasis. It advanced to psoriatic arthritis a few years later. Good luck.
