How Can You Differentiate RA And Psoriatic Arthritis And Is It Possible To Have Both.

A MyPsoriasisTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

When I had private insurance (prior to retiring) I tried several different biological meds and had the best success with Humira. After retiring neither Medicare or supplemental insurance will cover humira and now I have to rely on Cimzia injections 1x/month which require a 44 mile round trip to my rheumatologist. I don’t think Cimzia is nearly as effective as Humira. Also Humira can be self-administered.

To differentiate between rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA), consider the following points:

Similarities:
- Both are inflammatory autoimmune conditions: They share symptoms like joint stiffness, pain, inflammation, and exhaustion.

Differences:
- Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA):
- Related to psoriasis, which causes scaly, discolored patches on the skin.
- Can affect the skin and nails.
- May involve dactylitis (swelling of entire fingers or toes).

- Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA):
- Targets the lining of the membranes surrounding the joints (synovium).
- Causes joint inflammation and permanent joint damage.
- Not directly related to skin conditions like psoriasis.

Diagnosis:
- Imaging Tests: X-rays, ultrasound, and MRI can help diagnose and differentiate between PsA and RA.
- Blood Tests: Specific markers can help identify RA.

Coexistence:
- It is possible to have both PsA and RA simultaneously. Symptoms may overlap or come and go, making diagnosis challenging.

For an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan, consult a doctor or rheumatologist.
