I Am Nervous About Taking Corticosteroids, What Do I Do?

A MyPsoriasisTeam Member asked a question 💭
Phoenix, AZ

I have an appointment with my dermatologist shortly and I’ve tried all of the creams and lotions to treat my psoriasis, but still it isn’t working. Therefore, I feel pretty confident that my dermatologist will suggest corticosteroids. However, the side effects are frightening and make me not want to take them and maybe I’m just better off living with the psoriasis rather than taking such heavy medication.

There are new creams out now that are not steroidal. There is dovonex, it is vitamin d based. Just have to talk to a dermatologist about where you can all use it on you. Or there is Vtama which I've recently seen recommended on this site that's not a steroid one either. I'm sure the dermatologist should be able to go over some that are steroid free. You don't want those effects. Just insist to them you want to take something that doesn't have that. Hope you find something soon

Everyone responds to corticosteroids differently. I can’t take them. My first experience in 2nd grade left me swelled up bad. But I also have ADHD and allergies with asthma and things can either have no effect or a drastic one.

I know this feeling! It’s such a big decision.

I’m saving up to see a functional medicine doctor in the future to look for a root cause. So tired of more medicine thrown at the symptoms, creating more symptoms. 😵‍💫

Hoping the meds will be a last resort for me. 🫣🤞

It's understandable to feel nervous about corticosteroids. Discuss your concerns openly with your dermatologist—they may suggest alternatives like nonsteroidal topicals (e.g., vitamin D analogs or calcineurin inhibitors), phototherapy, or biologics, which may have fewer side effects. If corticosteroids are recommended, ask Show Full Answer

If corticosteroids are recommended, ask about low-potency options or short-term use to minimize risks. Your doctor can help balance treatment benefits with your comfort level.
