Your rheumatologist and dermatologist may have differing opinions because methotrexate is used for both psoriatic arthritis and psoriasis, but the duration of use can depend on your specific condition and response to treatment. Long-term methotrexate use can be safe with proper monitoring, but it carries risks like liver damage, bone marrow suppression, and other side effects. Regular blood tests and medical supervision are essential. Discuss your concerns with both doctors to align on a plan.

Meds are very specific to the patient’s ability to tolerate them. I had elevated liver enzymes with Methotrexate, and I took it with Hydroxychloraquin. I just got taken off Leflumonide that I took with Xeljanz, After 12 days of nausea, hair loss, and depression I’m glad to be off it. It can also cause high blood pressure, which I already had. There’s another DMARD that I can’t take because I’m allergic to sulfa. So we’re back to just Xeljanz until my insurance company realizes I’m no longer on a DMARD. I have a good friend who has been on methotrexate for many years, but she seems able to tolerate it. So, it’s a case by case matter. Just be certain to get regular bloodwork to monitor it.
