Watch on Demand: Straight Talk on Skin Conditions With Dr. Kim and Dr. Richmond

Written by Torrey Kim
Posted on July 15, 2021

“Skin conditions can take a tremendous toll on people’s lives.”

Dr. Brian Kim shared this important insight during MyHealthTeam’s live Q&A event on July 14, 2021, when members of the psoriasis, vitiligo, eczema, and hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) communities had a chance to learn about the causes of itch, what triggers skin conditions to flare up, and which new therapies are on the horizon to treat these conditions.

Dermatologists Dr. Brian Kim and Dr. Heather Richmond answered members’ questions about whether any tests exist to diagnose conditions like eczema or vitiligo, which at-home remedies can help treat skin conditions, and how to manage cracks that occur on psoriasis plaques.

Here are some of the questions Dr. Kim and Dr. Richmond answered during the live Q&A:

  • Do bleach baths really work to ease eczema symptoms?
  • Should people with psoriasis or vitiligo avoid getting tattoos?
  • How can people sleep better if they’re itching during the night?
  • Are any autoimmune conditions associated with skin conditions?

Check out the video to see the entire one-hour event, and register to be notified about future upcoming live Q&A sessions on MyPsoriasisTeam.

Speakers:

Dr. Brian S. Kim is co-director for the Center for the Study of Itch and Sensory Disorders and associate professor of medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Key discoveries from his laboratory include the first identification of group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) in the skin of both mice and humans, and their role in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis (AD) or eczema. Most recently, he has discovered how the immune system directly regulates sensory neurons to modulate the sensation of itch and how natural killer (NK) cells may be used as an immunotherapy strategy for AD. These studies have revealed novel therapeutic strategies which have led to successful clinical trials for new drugs for AD. He has multiple patents pending that led to the formation of Nuogen Pharma, Inc. that is developing JAK inhibitors for chronic pruritus. Dr. Kim’s research on innate immunity and neuroimmune regulation of AD and itch has led to awards and funding from the National Institutes of Health, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, American Skin Association, American Academy of Dermatology, American Society for Clinical Investigation, American Dermatological Association, and the International League of Dermatology Societies. Dr. Kim has a Master of Science in Translational Research from the University of Pennsylvania. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Dr. Heather Richmond is a board-certified dermatologist who attended college at Yale University, from which she graduated cum laude in 2002 with distinction in her major of molecular, cellular, and developmental biology. During her third year as a medical student at the University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine, she was initiated into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. She graduated in the top 10 percent of her medical school class with distinctions in both service and research. She went on to complete her internal medicine internship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. Dr. Richmond finished her training with a residency in dermatology at the University of Texas at Houston/MD Anderson Cancer Center, where she served as chief resident in her final year. She is board-certified by the American Board of Dermatology and is a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology. She has been practicing dermatology in the Houston area since 2011 and has been recognized by Texas Super Doctors, America’s Top Dermatologists, and Texas Monthly’s Top Doctors.

Heather Lapidus Glassner has over two decades of experience in market research. She has been with MyHealthTeam for five years, conducting social listening and quantitative survey research. Her focus is to raise awareness of life with chronic conditions, including MS, lupus, Parkinson’s, COPD, Crohn’s and colitis, migraine, and psoriasis.
