Is My Rheumatologist Exaggerating?

A MyPsoriasisTeam Member asked a question 💭
California City, CA

I was recently diagnosed with PsA for a very mildly swollen/not painful knee.

My rheumatologist immediately recommended the immunosuppressant methotrexate. I have a very mild case, and am only 19 years old.

I am very fearful of taking such a strong drug, especially since my disease barely affects my day to day.

Is this an overreaction?

I refused to take methotrexate when I was diagnosed three years ago. My rheumatologist didn't discuss diet at all but when I questioned him about diet he said it makes a big difference. I think you are right to be cautious about taking a very toxic drug. If you are so young and have a diagnosis it would be prudent to research diet and natural alternatives. There is a myriad of information linking diet and gut dysbiosis to all sorts of inflammatory conditions.

In order after topicals and shampoos, I have taken Humira (developed PE), Enbrel (can cause seizures), Cosentyx (loved it but due to Medicare, NPAF said I made too much $$; I am retired. So 5 years later, I am 4 years without treatment.

My dermatologist suggested Methotrexate which interacts with a lot of drugs, should not be take by women over 75, is a cancer drug, and induces abortions.

I aked my rheumatologist for hydroxychloroquine; she responded that she would give methotrexate after I already had told her interactions with AED. I refused treatment with Methotrexate. All of a sudden, biologic through part b was approved by healthcare and Medicare!

Rheumatologist is trying to get medication through part b of medicare so this means it is an infusion (Orencia, 3 x starter plus 1 infusion every 28 weeks.) More than a little nervous about this because I still don't know the cost (I pay 20%) It like Enbrel can cause seizures.

Hi @A MyPsoriasisTeam Member
Welcome.
I doubt anyone here can tell you whether your doctor is overreacting.. but you can seek other opinions from other doctors.

I know this is a cumulative condition where inflammation plays a great part. Interested in this, I’ve asked numerous doctors about things ranging from the gut’s place in this to whether what we eat has any effect. All but my GP begged off and either refused to discuss it or denied both.

This caused me to start reading about this about three years ago and what I’ve learned from science as new information has been released has helped me reduce inflammation.. I still treat my condition but have further improved it through focused nutrition.. I’ve added you to my team, please consider reading my profile, where I link the updates I’ve written.
