I Am Responding To Helping Those Whose Nails Have Been Infected With PsA

A MyPsoriasisTeam Member asked a question 💭
Surfers Paradise, AU

All my nails game down with pitted and yellow nails immediately after a day after an edarterectomy of the left caotid artery

1. I used Betamethasone Topical (gel) daily for a year to spread lightly out the pits and cuts and yellow markings
2. I trimmed my mails more often than not to encourage the nails to grow

It sounds like you've been dealing with some challenging nail symptoms related to PsA. Here are some additional tips and treatments that might help:

Additional Treatments:
- Topical Therapies: Continue using treatments like corticosteroids and calcipotriol (a form of vitamin D) to reduce symptoms such as buildup under the nails.
- Tazarotene (Tazorac): This topical cream or gel can be effective for treating nail pitting, discoloration, and separation.
- Systemic Treatments: For severe nail problems, systemic treatments like methotrexate and biologic drugs (e.g., adalimumab, etanercept, risankizumab-rzaa) can be considered. These medications work throughout the body and can take months to show results.
- Corticosteroid Injections: Injections into the nail matrix can treat buildup, ridges, thickening, and separation. If the first treatment is ineffective, another injection may be suggested after a few months.
- Phototherapy: Psoralen plus ultraviolet A (PUVA) therapy can sometimes improve psoriatic nail problems.

Nail Care Tips:
- Cut Your Nails: Keeping your nails trimmed can prevent injuries and reduce buildup under the nails.
- Sterilize Your Nail Tools: Always sterilize your nail tools to prevent infections.
- Protect Your Nails: Use gloves when doing activities that might damage your nails.

Prevention:
- Nail Care Plan: Coupling your PsA treatment with a nail care plan can help maintain nail health and prevent further issues.

If you have any concerns or need personalized advice, it's always best to consult with your dermatologist or rheumatologist.
